Gospel of Matthew Chapter 24 Vs. 14

Signs of the End of the Age

Matthew 24:14 “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”

gospel of the kingdom... Glad Tidings

Greek: euangelizo, good news or glad tidings of various kinds.

Used In the Old Testament (Septuagint) Of:

1. Any kind of good news (1Sam. 31:9; 2Sam. 1:20; 1Ch. 10:9)

2. God’s kindnesses (Psm. 36:10; 96:2)

3. Messianic blessings (Isa. 40:9; 61:1)

Used in the New Testament Of:

1. The kingdom of heaven and of God (Mat. 4:23; 9:35; 24:14; Mark 1:14)

2. God (7 times, Rom. 1:1; 15:16)

3. Jesus Christ (14 times, Mark 1:1; Rom. 1:16; 15:29; 1Cor. 9:12-18)

4. Salvation, including all phases of redemption of Rom. 1:16 (Mark 16:15; Luke 4:18; Eph. 1:3)

5. The grace of God (Acts 20:24)

6. Peace (Rom. 10:15; Eph. 6:15)

7. The promises (Eph. 3:6; Heb. 8:6)

8. The truth (Eph. 1:13; Col. 1:5)

9. Faith (Phlp. 1:27)

10. Hope (Col. 1:23)

11. Immortality (2Tim. 1:10)

12. The general blessings of the new covenant called the gospel 74 times (Mark 16:15; Gal. 1:11; 3:8). There is only one gospel and both Jews and Gentiles are required to obey the whole New Testament from Matthew to Revelation (Mat. 28:20; Acts 1:1-2; Rom. 10:12; 1Cor. 12:13; Gal. 3:28; Eph. 2:11-22; 3:5-11).

The gospel of the kingdom is not only of a coming kingdom, but is of salvation and all benefits of the good news of Christ (Mat. 6:33; 13:11-50; 18:1-35; Mark 1:14-15; John 3:3-5; Acts 8:12; 20:25; 28:23, 28:31; Rom. 14:17; 2Cor. 4:1-18:20; 2Cor. 6:9; Col. 1:13).

shall be preached... Despite all the tribulations that would come, the deception of false teachers, the wars, persecutions, natural disaster, defections from Christ, and all the obstacles to the spread of the gospel, the message ultimately penetrates every part of the globe. God is never without a witness, and He will proclaim the gospel from heaven itself if necessary (Rev. 14:6).

all the world... Greek: oikoumene, civilized world as distinguished from the heathen. Not the same as aion (Mat. 24:3), or kosmos, social system (Mat. 24:21).

World (τῇ οἰκουμένη)

Lit., the inhabited. The whole habitable globe. Rev., in margin, inhabited earth.

unto all nations... To nations, not every individual in every nation, for many will not hear until the Millennium (Isa. 2:2-4; 11:9; 66:19-21; Zec. 8:23).

then shall the... Then—when the gospel of the kingdom is preached again as a witness to all nations. This could only refer to the original gospel, including preaching, teaching, and healing, as it began with Christ and the early church (Mat. 4:23-24; 9:35; Luke 4:18; 1Cor. 4:20). It could not be an announcement of the coming kingdom, for people of nations do that now and pray daily, Thy kingdom come. This clearly teaches another great outpouring of the Spirit and a revival of the original New Testament program in all fullness (Acts 2:16-21).

The end refers to the final, excruciating birth pangs. This is how Christ characterizes the time of Great Tribulation described in the verses that follow.

The good news (gospel), of Jesus Christ is now being preached throughout the world. Satellite television has carried the message around the world. In the remote areas that do not have television, God has sent missionaries. Everyone has an opportunity to either accept or reject Jesus as his Savior.

If there is one sign more than all others, I believe this is it. The end of the Gentile age is near. The end spoken of here, is the end of the age.

We see here the gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world during this period as a testimony to all nations. Though this will be a terrible time of persecution, the Lord will have servants who will witness and spread the good news concerning Christ and His soon-coming kingdom. This message will be similar to that preached by John the Baptist, Jesus, and the disciples at the beginning of Matthew’s Gospel, but this message will clearly identify Jesus in His true character as the coming Messiah. This is not exactly the same message the church is proclaiming today. The message preached today in the Church Age and the message proclaimed in the Tribulation period calls for turning to the Savior for salvation. However, in the Tribulation the message will stress the coming kingdom, and those who then turn to the Savior for salvation will be allowed entrance into the kingdom. Apparently many will respond to that message (cf. Rev. 7:9-10).
