My Sheep Hear My Voice

In these last hours of time you need to hear His voice. When He tells you something, it is very important, but most ignore my voice or just discuss it and go on with what they were doing. You will see many things start to happen shortly and if you do not hear and obey His voice,... it will mean death for some of you....Jesus has only your best interest in mind. Christ knows you heart, and if you are truly His you will hear His voice. He awakes many of you at 3am on the dot, but most will roll over and go back to sleep. There are a few who will get up and pray. Your day is filled with so many things and Jesus is the last thing many of you give your time to. But Christ needs to talk to you,... to fellowship with you and only when you are still and quite (3am) can you hear Him,... the rest of your day is so busy you do not have time for Him,... but you need to make time, for time is short and the Lord has instructions for you.

The Two Witnesses
These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will (Rev. 11:6).
These have power... Miracles have often authenticated God’s messengers. Here, bringing a 3-1/2 year drought (as did Elijah before them), will add immeasurable torment to those experiencing the worldwide disasters of the Tribulation, and exacerbate their hatred of the two witnesses.
power over waters... The earth’s water, already devastated by the effects of the second and third trumpets, will become undrinkable, adding immensely to the suffering caused by the drought.
Who Are They? Some try to identify one of the witnesses with Enoch (because he never died; Gen. 5:24), and the other with either Elijah (who also never died; 2 Kings 2:11-12), or Moses.
Elijah is famous for calling down fire from heaven. The most famous instance occurs (in 1 Kings 18), in the account of the contest between the prophets of Baal and Elijah. The Lord sent fire on Elijah's altar on Mt. Carmel in response to his simple prayer:
1 Kings 18:36-38 "Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel, and that I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your Word. Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again."
Elijah is connected to divinely caused drought as well as to judgments of fire. In fact, the very first time he is mentioned in the Scriptures he is heard saying to wicked King Ahab, "As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word" (1 Kings 17:1). And there wasn't; God honored the prophet's word.
Moses, of course, is intimately connected with the ten plagues that struck Egypt just before the Exodus (Exodus chapters 7-12). In the very first plague God turned the waters of Egypt into blood, including the Nile, all streams, rivers, ponds, pools, and even the water in buckets of wood and stone. The water turned to blood, killed the land's fish and caused the water to stink, and conditions did not return to normal for a week.
The Bible says in John chapter 14, that true believers in Christ can do even greater miracles than Jesus did when He was on the earth, when we do it through His power and in His name.
John 14:12 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”

The Two Witnesses
And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. Rev. 11:5
fire proceedeth out... God's word says this refers to literal fire. These two will be invincible during their ministry, protected by supernatural power. The false prophet will counterfeit this sign (13:3).
and devourith their...The world police and even the military will be powerless to silence them. Anyone who attempts to stop them from preaching is instantly destroyed. Even Antichrist's satanic powers are no match for these two fearless and God empowered preachers of truth. There can be no doubt that these two witnesses will have the attention of the entire world! Their message will be a declaration to all the nations on this earth to repent and to acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the world's rightful ruler.
Like the prophets of old we saw earlier these two witnesses will be able to do supernatural miracles, and fire will destroy those who will try to harm them (Rev. 11:5). Like Elijah they will have power to stop rain, and will have power like Moses to turn water into blood and to bring on plagues (Rev. 11:6). In the midst of the unbelief, apostasy, and satanic power of the Great Tribulation these two witnesses will be a threat to the entire wicked world for a literal period of 1,260 days.

They are to be prophets, for they will prophesy the last three-and one-half years of the tribulation, Rev. 11:3. The main thought is that they will preach to Israel (as they will to all the nations as said above) and try to turn their hearts back to God and each other, in order to avert the judgment of God on them, Mal. 4:5-6.

The Two Witnesses
These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. Rev 11:4
The description of the two witnesses as olive trees and lampstands has an Old Testament background (Zec. 4:2-14). The two witnesses in this passage were Joshua the high priest and Zerubbabel the governor. Their connection to the lampstands was that they were empowered by the Holy Spirit, symbolized by the olive oil. In a similar way the two witnesses of Rev. 11:1-19 will be empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Like prophets of old the two witnesses will be able to do supernatural miracles, and fire will destroy those who will try to harm them (Rev. 11:5). Like Elijah they will have power to stop rain, and will have power like Moses to turn water into blood and to bring on plagues (Rev. 11:6). In the midst of the unbelief, apostasy, and satanic power of the Great Tribulation these two witnesses will be a threat to the entire wicked world for a literal period of 1,260 days.
This imagery is drawn from Zech. chapters 3 and 4 (see notes there). Zechariah’s vision had both a near fulfillment (the rebuilding of the temple by Joshua and Zerubbabel), and a far future fulfilment (the two witnesses, whose ministry points toward Israel’s final restoration in the Millennium).
two olive trees,... Olive oil was commonly used in lamps; together the olive trees and lampstands symbolize the light of spiritual revival. The two witnesses’ preaching will spark a revival, just as Joshua’s and Zerubbabel’s did in Israel after the Babylonian captivity.
What a dynamic and compelling message from God these two amazing witnesses will bring to "all nations!" No one can write them off as crazies, for they display incredible supernatural powers and defy the Antichrist and his underlings to stop them. No doubt they will be seen daily on international television in every corner of the earth as they warn mankind of God's coming judgment.
standing before the... They will perform miracles similar to those performed by Moses (compare Exodus 7:14-20; 8:12), and Elijah (1 Kings 17:1; 2 Kings 1:10-12; Luke 4:25; James 5:17). They are protected from harm for three and a half years. Their miraculous powers are apparently for the purpose of authenticating their divine message (as in the case of Jesus and His apostles). Their message will be twofold:
(1) Jesus is the Lamb of God (Savior); and
(2) Jesus is the King (Ruler).
The miracles show that the King is coming again to set up His kingdom, and therefore Israel must repent.

The Two Witnesses
"And I will give [power] unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred [and] threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
Eighteen Facts Identifying the Two Witnesses:
1. They are two men, not covenants, dispensations, etc. (Rev. 11:3, 11:7-12).
2. They are Christ’s witnesses (Rev. 11:3).
3. They will be given power in the future when they come to earth (Rev. 11:3). This does not require them to be men who have already exercised this power.
4. They will be prophets (Rev. 11:3, 11:10).
5. They will prophesy the last 42 months, 1260 days, 3 1/2 years of this age (Rev. 11:2-3; 12:6, 12:14; 13:5; Dan. 7:25; 12:7).
6. They will be clothed in sackcloth (Rev. 11:3).
7. They are symbolized by two olive trees and two candlesticks which stand before God (Rev. 11:4; Zec. 4:11-14).
8. They were already in heaven when Zechariah prophesied, about 500 years before Christ (Zec. 4:11-14).
9. John saw them in heaven about 96 A.D., so whoever they are they are two men translated to reside in heaven at least 500 years before Christ (Rev. 11:4; Zec. 4:11-14; Mal. 4:5-6). This will exclude John the Baptist, John the Apostle, and every other man living after 500 B.C.
10. They will be invincible for the 3 1/2 years of their ministry (Rev. 11:5-7).
11. They will have power to destroy their enemies the same way their enemies seek to destroy them (Rev. 11:5).
12. They will be able to cause fire to come out of their mouths to devour their enemies (Rev. 11:5).
13. They will have power to stop rain all the days of their prophecy (Rev. 11:6).
14. They will have power to turn the water into blood and smite the earth with plagues as often as they will (Rev. 11:6).
15. When the 1260-day ministry is finished the supernatural angelic spirit out of the abyss will use the human Antichrist to kill them (Rev. 11:7).
16. Since it is appointed unto man once to die (Heb. 9:27), it is certain that they are two men who have never died so that they can die at the hands of the Antichrist in the future. This excludes Moses or any other man who has already died as one of the witnesses.
17. They will remain dead for 3 1/2 days and then be resurrected (Rev. 11:8-11). This further proves that they are two men who have never died and that they will not be resurrected, immortal men when they come from heaven to begin their ministry.
18. There would seem to be only two men in the Bible who could fulfil these facts about the two witnesses. They are Enoch and Elijah. That Elijah will be one of them is clearly predicted in Mal. 4:5-6. John the Baptist was never Elijah, fulfilling this prophecy. He said that he was not Elijah (John 1:21). He only came in the same spirit and power of Elijah to prepare the hearts of people for the Messiah’s first coming in the way that Elijah will prepare their hearts for the second coming of the Messiah (Luke 1:17). Enoch is the only other man transported so that he would not experience death in his lifetime on earth (Gen. 5:21-24; Heb. 11:5; 2Ki. 2:1-25). Both were prophets of judgment (Jude 1:14-15; 1 Kings 17-18). Both must come back and die their own appointed death on earth, as all men must who live before the rapture (Heb. 9:27; 1Co. 15:51-58). If either Enoch or Elijah had been transported in immortal, glorified bodies, they would have been the firstfruits of the resurrection instead of Christ (1Co. 15:20-23). This proves they are in heaven in their natural bodies. They will continue there until their return to fulfil Rev. 11:1-19. The lives of Enoch and Elijah are parallel in every sense, so their cases rise or fall together as to being the two witnesses.
And I will... Two of the most colorful characters in all biblical prophecy may be the supernatural prophets that burst on the scene for the second half of the Tribulation. According to (chapter 11 of Revelation), these two are dressed in sackcloth, prophesy, dispense astonishing miracles and witness to the grace of God in the evilest culture known to mankind.
Though some believe Elijah and Enoch are the two witnesses, some Bible scholars consider them to be Moses and Elijah. Proponents of the Moses and Elijah argument point out these two Old Testament characters where the most influential Hebrew men of their respective times. Moses introduced God’s written Law to Israel, and Elijah was the first of the writing prophets and even started the school for the prophets. In fact, whenever the Jews said “Moses and Elijah”, they usually meant “the law and the prophets”.
Together with the 144,000 witnesses, the two witnesses of Revelation 11 will have awesome power and impact in producing the enormous soul harvest of the these 42 months of the Tribulation described (in Revelation chapter 7). They will provide the millions of Jews in the Holy Land a spiritual bridge to the Christian gospel. God will demonstrate His mighty power and existence through these two prophets over whom the Antichrist will have no power until the God-appointed time. Before that designated time, the two witnesses will be untouchable, and anyone who threatens them will be killed (Rev. 11:5).
These two witnesses of Revelation 11 will have awesome power and impact, together with the 144,000 witnesses, in producing the enormous soul harvest. They will provide the millions of Jews in the Holy Land a theological and spiritual bridge to the Christian gospel. Many of the souls harvested at that time will be the sons and daughters of Abraham.
a thousand two hundred... Forty-two months or 3-1/2 years (compare 12:6; 13:5; see verse 2).
clothed in sackcloth... Coarse, rough cloth made from goat or camel hair. Wearing garments made from it expressed penitence, humility, and mourning (compare Gen. 37:34; 2 Sam. 3:31; 2 Kings 6:30; 19:1; Esther 4:1; Isa. 22:12; Jer. 6:26; Matt. 11:21). The witnesses are mourning because of the wretched wickedness of the world, God’s judgment on it, and the desecration of the temple and the holy city by the Antichrist.

Adversaries Oppose the Rebuilding

Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel; Ezr. 4:1

the adversaries of... As usual, when God begins to bless His people, the devil raises up adversaries to oppose His work. Here the enemies of Israel came posing as friends and worshipers of Jehovah, and offered to build with them. They bragged about worshiping Jehovah from the days of Esarhaddon, son of Sennacherib, king of Assyria (Ezr. 4:1-20). A priest had been sent to them many years before but the Samaritans didn’t know the Lord. Rather, they "feared the Lord, and served their graven images" (2Ki. 17:28-41).

Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither. Ezr. 4:2

The “enemies” (called “the peoples around them,” Ezr. 4:4) were the descendants of these mixed peoples and the forefathers of the New Testament Samaritans. These people in Ezra’s day claimed that they worshiped the same God, that is, Yahweh, the God of Israel. But they had a syncretistic form of worship; they worshiped both Yahweh and others (2Ki. 17:29, 17:32-34, 17:41). Therefore their statement (Ezr. 4:2) was not fully accurate and was apparently made to mislead the leadership of the returned band. Esarhaddon, king of Assyria, who brought us here, was the Assyrian monarch who aggressively pursued the policy of partial deportation and to whose reign these enemies could trace their ancestry in Israel.

But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us. Ezr. 4:3

Ye have nothing... The Samaritans’ offer was rejected by the elders because Israel wanted to remain a separate people. This was what God had required of Israel from the very beginning. They were to be a separate people in all phases of life and an example of God to all nations. On the whole, they have never intermarried. God permitted intermarriage and even blessed such on rare occasions, but the practice for the nation was contrary to His law and will (Deut. 7:3). As Israel we the bride of Christ (Church) are to separate from the world and an example to all nations to arouse their need to salvation.

Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building, Ezr. 4:4

Then the people... Since their offer to help build the temple was rejected, the adversaries tried other methods of weakening the will of the Jews to build. They hired counselors who sought to turn Cyrus and Darius, kings of Persia, against them (Ezr. 4:4-5). They accused the Jews of building with the intent of rebellion, which they had done historically, before their destruction (Ezr. 4:6-16).

And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
Ezr. 4:5

hired counsellors against... They hired men in the court of Cyrus and the other kings following him, to try and stop, or at least delay, the restoration work.

days of Cyrus... This Cyrus must be identified with the one in Ezr. 1:1-4, or Cyrus II, according to the Cylinder of Cyrus.

reign of Darius... This Darius must not be identified as Darius the Mede of Dan. 5:1-31, who was the father of Cyrus and the husband of Queen Esther. He must be identified as Darius Hystaspis, the ninth of the Kings of Persia. He was the third king after Cyrus.

And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem. Ezr. 4:6

reign of Ahasuerus... This could not refer to the Ahasuerus of Est. 1:1, who was the father of Cyrus. Ahasuerus is simply a title meaning Mighty, one claimed by several Persian kings. Here it may refer to Cambyses, the son of Cyrus. It couldn’t refer to Cyrus himself, for he is mentioned in this record (Ezr. 4:5); he was the one that decreed liberation for Israel in the first year of his reign (Ezr. 1:1-4). Such a letter would not have been written to him in the beginning of his reign, for he had just made the decree at that time. It would be logical, though, to write in such a manner to the next king in the beginning of his reign. By then the Jews were back in Judah. No doubt it took several years during the reign of Cyrus for them to return, get settled, prepare materials and get started on the work. Cyrus reigned for nine years and his son Cambyses reigned for seven years. Thus, the work overlapped their reigns (see Ezr. 6:15).

The Letter to King Artaxerxes

And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue. Ezr. 4:7

days of Artaxerxes... This was Hytaspes, the successor of Cambyses; he reigned for seven months between Cambyses and Darius Hystaspis who is referred to in Ezr. 4:24. He made a decree that the work should be discontinued, and it was enforced. The work was stopped by force until the second year of Darius Hystaspis (Ezr. 4:17-24) when the original decree of Cyrus was investigated and confirmed (Ezr. 4:24; 5:1-6:18). Since Darius, Ahasuerus, and Artaxerxes are just titles, any or all of them could have been used by any of these kings. To decide who is definitely referred to on the basis of such titles is impossible. We can only go by the time element in such passages.

the Syrian tongue... This was Aramaic, a dialect of Damascus and a Semitic language akin to the Hebrew, but sufficiently different to be unintelligible to the common Jew (2Ki. 18:26).

Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort: Ezr. 4:8

Rehum the chancellor... The Lord of judgments—a title of the Persian governor of Samaria. Every Persian governor was accompanied to the province by a royal scribe, or secretary, who had a separate and independent authority.

wrote a letter... The text of Ezra 4:8-6:18 is in Aramaic (Syriac); Ezra 6:19-7:11 is in Hebrew; and Ezr. 7:12-26 is in Aramaic (Syriac).

Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites, Ezr. 4:9

rest of their companions... These represent the eight different peoples that settled in Samaria after the captivity of the ten tribes (2Ki. 17:1-41).

And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time. Ezr. 4:10

and noble Asnappar... Assurbanipal, the only Assyrian king who got into Elam and held Shushan, the capital.

this side the... This side—west of the Euphrates.

This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time. Ezr. 4:11

the copy of... These letters were for no other purpose but to stir up trouble between Artaxerxes and Judah.

The writers of the letter (cf. This is a copy of the letter; Ezr. 4:23; 5:6; 7:11) identified with the Persian king by noting that they were his servants. The letter itself is recorded in Ezr. 4:12-16. The opponents noted that the Jews were restoring the walls and repairing the foundations.

Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations. Ezr. 4:12

Be it known... It was not actually this king who had sent them. Cyrus was the king of Persia at the time they were sent to Jerusalem. The Jews had rebelled against Nebuchadnezzar, and that is what they were reminding this evil king of here. They were not rebelling now, but doing what Cyrus sent them to Jerusalem to do.
that the Jews... This name was generally used after the Captivity because the exiles who returned were mainly of Judah. Most of the people of the 10 northern tribes were dispersed and the largest number of returnees came from the two southern tribes.
rebellious and the... The bad city, the choice of the word rebellious is important, because the Persian Empire was continually plagued with rebellions during the fifth century B.C., one notable one by Megabyzus of the Trans-Euphrates area. Jerusalem had a history of rebellions against foreign powers, such as those under Jehoiakim (2 Kings 24:1), and Zedekiah (2 Chron. 36:13), and even as far back as during the reigns of Hezekiah and Manasseh (2 Chron. 32:33), in the days of the Assyrians.



Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings. Ezr. 4:13

Be it known... And let it be seriously and thoroughly considered by him and his counsellors.
if this city... Be builded, and its walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom": Being able to defend themselves against the king's forces, sent to reduce them to their obedience. These words take in all sorts of taxes and levies on persons, goods, and merchandise.
and so thou... It shall endamage the revenue of the kings; not only his own, but his successors": This they thought would be a very striking and powerful argument with him.
They were trying to get this new king to stop Jerusalem from building a wall of protection around it. The easiest way to get the attention of this new king was to appeal to the loss of money from taxation of this province. Of course, there had been no rebellion, but they were not bothered with facts. They were trying to help themselves and not the king of Persia.


Now because we have maintenance from the king's palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king's dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king; Ezr. 4:14


because we have... Have posts under the king, to which salaries were annexed, by which they were supported, and which they had from the king's exchequer. Or "salt", as in the original, some places of honor and trust formerly being paid in salt. Hence, as Pliny observes, such honors and rewards were called "salaries".
and it was... Would not meet for us to see the king's dishonor": To see anything done injurious to his crown and dignity or to his honor and revenues, when we are supported by him. This would be ungrateful as well as unjust.
therefore have we... Sent and certified the king": Of the truth of what is before related; and, for the further confirmation of it, refer him to the ancient records of the kingdom, as follows in verse 15.
They are pretending to look after the interest of the king of Persia. They eat salt that he had provided, is perhaps what is meant by maintenance. They are pretending to be protecting the king's interest.


That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed. Ezr. 4:15

book of the... These records”: An administrative document called a “memorandum” kept on file in the royal archives.
and hurtful unto... A reference to Jerusalem’s destruction by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar (ca. 586 B.C.).
The northern kingdom of Israel rebelled against the Assyrians (in 701 B.C.; 2 Kings 18:7), and Judah rebelled against the Babylonians (in 600 and 589 B.C.; 2 Kings 24:1, 20). The latter rebellion led to the destruction of Jerusalem. The Jewish people never rebelled against the Persians, because the Persians allowed them to worship the Lord.
within the same... Nebuchadnezzar had come against Jerusalem, because the LORD had turned him against His people. Their being unfaithful to God was what caused their destruction. The records would possibly show a rebellion against Nebuchadnezzar, however.



We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river. Ezr. 4:16



certify the king... Five assertions made to the king:
1. They will not pay toll, tribute, or custom to you (Ezr. 4:13)
2. You will be dishonored (Ezr. 4:14)
3. Jerusalem has been a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings (Ezr. 4:15)
4. The city was destroyed because of many rebellions
5. You will have no portion on this side of the Euphrates (Ezr. 4:16)
and the walls... This is proof that the walls had not yet been completed. Therefore, Neh. 1:1-7:4 had not been fulfilled up to this point in the events of Ezra. Both the temple and the walls were in the process of being built, and this was the reason for the opposition. Had the walls been completed, the men who halted the work in the temple could have been kept out (Ezr. 4:23).

The King Orders the Work to Cease

Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time. Ezr. 4:17

sent the king... This affair, upon examination, being found to be of importance, the king of Persia thought fit to send an answer to the above letter, which was doing them an honor, and gave them the power and authority they wished to have.
the rest of... Of their companions that dwelt in Samaria": In the kingdom, province, and cities of Samaria.
unto the rest... Beyond the river, the River Euphrates and the rest of the nations before mentioned (Ezr. 4:9).
Peace, and at... That is, all health and prosperity.


The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me. Ezr. 4:18

The letter which... The plural number is used, being now become courtly for kings thus to speak of themselves.
hath been plainly... By such that understood both the Syrian and Persian languages. The letter was written in the Syrian language, and the king being a Persian, it was necessary it should be interpreted and explained to him.


And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein. Ezr. 4:19


and search hath... The king searched and found the accusations against Judah and Jerusalem to be true—mighty kings had ruled many countries from this place and collected tribute from many lands (Ezr. 4:17-22).


made insurrection against... Judah had been guilty of several insurrections against foreign kings who had sought to enslave them (2 Kings 24-25; 2 Chron. 35-36).


There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them. Ezr. 4:20

been mighty kings... Such as David, Solomon, Asa, Uzziah, Hezekiah, and others. And the account of these they had in their records (see 2 Sam. 8:1).

and toll... As appears from the places referred to. And this served to strengthen the insinuation made to the king, that if these people were suffered to go on building, he would lose his tribute and taxes in those parts.
paid unto them... This was a true statement, that they did collect tribute. The remnant of the people in Jerusalem now was not large enough to be a threat to anyone, however.



Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me. Ezr. 4:21

Give ye now... After the letter and the search of Ezr. 4:19, the king commanded that the work on the walls and temple cease. By this time about sixteen years had passed since the decree of Cyrus in Ezr. 1:1-4. Thousands of Jews had returned to Judah, much work on the walls had been done, and the temple work was in progress. The entire decree of Cyrus was canceled for the time being, until the second year of the new king, which would be at least one to two more years (Ezr. 4:21-24).

until another commandment... "Until" implies that this commandment wasn’t final. Evidently, further investigation was intended before final action would be taken. This king, known as Gomates, the Pseudo-Smerdis, was soon slain by Darius Hystaspis, the real heir to the throne. Search continued until the second year of his reign when the final decree to continue rebuilding the city and temple was given (Ezr. 4:24; Ezr. 5:1-6:18).

Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings? Ezr. 4:22

take heed now... To put his orders into execution, and at once, without any loss of time, oblige the Jews to desist from rebuilding the walls of their city, which he was told they were doing, though a great falsehood.
why should damage... Question 2. Next, Ezr. 5:3. Of him and his successors, to be deprived of their toll, tribute, and customs, and to have insurrections, mutinies, and rebellions, in the dominions belonging to them.

They were to act immediately upon this, so the king would suffer no loss.



Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power. Ezr. 4:23

they went up... The Jews could have resisted, but they would have hurt their cause by doing exactly what they were accused of in the letter to Artaxerxes (Ezr. 4:15-16). Instead, when they received definite word from the king, they did what they thought best—temporarily suspended the work (Ezr. 4:24). In the meantime, God was dealing with the new king, Darius Hystaspis, to put it into his heart to allow the work that Cyrus had decreed to continue.

Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia. Ezr. 4:24

The narrative now picks up where it left off after Ezr. 4:5 (Ezr. 4:6-23 are a lengthy parenthesis). The result of the opposition during Cyrus’ reign was that work on the temple was suspended until the second year of… Darius (520 b.c.), some 18 years after the people had returned to the land for the purpose of rebuilding the house of God.

Before Jesus was crucified He told the disciples to watch and pray, something so simple, but they let their physical bodies take over and they fell back asleep. In these last hours of time you need to hear His voice. When He tells you something, it is very important, but most ignore my voice or just discuss it and go on with what they were doing. You will see many things start to happen shortly and if you do not hear and obey His voice,... it will mean death for some of you....Jesus has only your best interest in mind. Christ knows you heart, and if you are truly His you will hear His voice. He awakes many of you at 3am on the dot, but most will roll over and go back to sleep. There are a few who will get up and pray. Your day is filled with so many things and Jesus is the last thing many of you give your time to. But Christ needs to talk to you,... to fellowship with you and only when you are still and quite (3am) can you hear Him,... the rest of your day is so busy you do not have time for Him,... but you need to make time, for time is short and the Lord has instructions for you.

Revelation Chapter 11
The Temple of God and the Two Witnesses
(Parenthetical Rev. 11:1-13)
This parenthetical passage includes from (Rev. 10:1-11:13) continues with the measuring of the temple of God and the revelation of the two witnesses, who will be on earth the last three and one-half years of Daniel's Seventieth Week.
The Temple of God
But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty [and] two months" (Rev. 11:2).


without the temple... Five temples in history and prophecy:

1. Solomon’s temple (1 Kings 5-8)
2. Zerubbabel’s temple (Haggai 1-2; Ezra 3:4-13; 6:1-22)
3. Herod’s temple (John 2:19-20; Mat. 24:1-51)
4. The future Jewish temple in the days of Antichrist (Dan. 9:27; 11:45; 12:7; Mat. 24:15; 2Th. 2:3-4; Rev. 11:1-2)
5. The millennial temple (Ezekiel 40-48; Zec. 6:12-13; see Eze. 45:7)
and measure it... The court here refers to the court of the Gentiles. It is not to be measured and given over to them, for it is already their part. The rest of the temple and Jerusalem, will be taken over by Antichrist for 42 months (Rev. 11:2; 13:1-18; 2Th. 2:2-4; Dan. 11:40-45; 12:7; Mat. 24:15).
for it is... Five things proved by this prophecy:
1. The times of the Gentiles did not end in 1843-1844, 1914-1918, 1924, 1927, 1936, 1942, 1948, 1954, or any other date set by man thus far.
2. The times of the Gentiles cannot end until the end of the 42 months of Rev. 11:2-3; 12:6, 12:14; 13:5 19:11-21; Luke 21:24; Zec. 14:1-21; Rom. 11:25-29).
3. The Jews must become victorious over the Arabs again in order to get control of Jerusalem so that it can be given back into the hands of the Gentiles for the 42 months (Rev. 11:1-2).
  1. The Jews will have to be defeated by the Antichrist before he can take over the city for the 42 months (Rev. 11:1-2; Dan. 11:40-45; 2Th. 2:2-4).
5. The Jews will become victorious over the Antichrist and the Gentiles at the end of the 42 months and will then have control of Jerusalem forever (Rev. 11:1-2; Zec. 14:1-21; Rev. 19:11-21).
tread... Greek: pateo, tread, walk on. Used here; Rev. 14:20; 19:15; Luke 10:19; 21:24.
court which is... The court of the Gentiles, separated from the inner court in the Herodian temple by a low wall. Gentiles were forbidden to enter the inner court on penalty of death. That John is instructed not to measure the outer court symbolizes God’s rejection of the unbelieving Gentiles who have oppressed His covenant people.
The outer court for the Gentiles means just this, the believer who is a Christian in name only, not in deed. This outer court is not the place for believers to be. The terrible thing in all of this is that among the outer court (the unsaved), are many nominal Christians, who are believing that they will be saved. The faithless portion of the church that we read about in (2 Timothy):
2 Tim. 3:5 "has a form of godliness but denies the power".
The terrible thing in all of this is that among the outer court (the unsaved), are many nominal Christians, who believe that they will be saved. This seems to be just asked of John to make him aware of the multitude of true believers who will be in the very presence of God. It is also, to remind him of those so-called Christians that have brought compromise and pleasing of the flesh into God's church.
the holy city... Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome all oppressed Jerusalem in ancient times (compare 2 Kings 25:8-10; Psalm 79:1; Isa. 63:18; Lam. 1:10). These verses refer to the future devastation destruction and oppression of Jerusalem by the forces of the Antichrist.
forty and two... The three and a half period covers the second half of the Tribulation and coincides with the visibly evil career of the Antichrist (verse 3; 12:6; 13:5). During this same time, the Jews will be sheltered by God in the wilderness (12:6, 14).
I would like to say again here that the Bible (and especially Revelation), must be understood by its signs and symbols through the spirit, and through the spirit understood literally. As any dream or vision has to be interpreted, so does Revelation.
The outer court represents the control of Jerusalem and Israel by Gentiles during the last half of the Tribulation period. In other words, it is too worldly for God. He is saying (throw them out), they are not part of the elect. They are not part of the body of Christ. The inner court makes up the body of believers.
We see here in this forty-two months that the holy city is trodden down; that the believers in Jesus "holy city" will go through 3-1/2 years of trials and tribulations. All through Revelation, the "holy city" is symbolic of the body of believers.
The holy city is the earthly Jerusalem (Dan. 9:24; Zech. 13:8-9; 14:2). The forty and two months show that Jerusalem will be under Gentile control for three-and-a-half years, probably the last half of the seven-year Tribulation period (Dan. 9:24-27, where the period of the Tribulation is seen as the Seventieth Week, or seven year period in God's postexilic program for Israel.
