Ezekiel Chapter 39 Vs. 7

 Prophecy against Gog

So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not [let them] pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I [am] the LORD, the Holy One in Israel. Eze. 39:7

will I make... Three Results of Armageddon:

I will make My holy name known in the midst of my people Israel

I will not permit them to pollute My holy name anymore

The heathen will know that I am the Holy One in Israel

I will not... Terrible calamities return people to God. Perhaps, that is why they happen. God's name is to be honored in the entire world. The name that God is called by, tells us of the character of God. Sometimes, He is called Truth, because that is what He is. Sometimes, He is called Abba, an endearing name for the Father. His name sometimes shows His eternity, such as Alpha and Omega the Beginning and the End. He, alone, is God Almighty and so all the world will know.

We read that the name of Jesus brings worship. Philippians 2:10-11: "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of [things] in heaven, and [things] in earth, and [things] under the earth;" "And [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is] Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

I am the... Through all this God will teach Israel that He is holy and is not to be profaned by their sins (cf. Eze. 36:22). Also the nations will see that He is the Holy One in Israel.

Through all this God will teach Israel that He is holy and is not to be profaned by their sins (cf. Eze. 36:22).

Romans Chapter 11 Vs. 7

The Remnant of Israel

What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded Rom 11:7

What then?... Question 75. Next, Rom. 11:11. What then is the real case under discussion? It is this, Israel has so earnestly desired. The election or chosen ones only have obtained it. The rest have been blinded.

In spite of their intense religious zeal, the Jews of Paul’s day had failed to obtain God’s righteousness.

The Elect are those whom God graciously had chosen in turn sought and found His righteousness.

rest were blinded... By a judicial act of God, in response to their hardened hearts. As we learned (in Romans 1), God gave them over to a reprobate mind.

Paul then discussed what “a remnant chosen by grace” out of Israel meant for the people as a whole. The situation was ironic. The Jews zealously sought to be accepted by God on the basis of works and the righteousness of the Law (cf. Rom. 10:2-3). However, they were not accepted by God; only the elect were, because of God’s sovereign choice by grace. The others were hardened (cf. Rom. 11:25). What it means to be hardened is seen from Paul’s explanatory and supporting quotations. The first is taken from both Deut. 29:3-4 and Isa. 29:10, and indicates that hardening involves spiritual drowsiness (stupor is the rendering of katanyxeōs, “a numbness resulting from a sting”), blindness.

Ezekiel Chapter 39 Vs. 6

 Prophecy against Gog

And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I [am] the LORD. Eze. 39:6

fire on Magog... It seems that Magog will be the chief hater of the Jews; it is thus singled out along with the maritime countries as the object of God’s wrath. This is perhaps why both Gog, the prince, and the land of Magog are mentioned in particular in Rev. 20:7-10 in connection with the last rebellion against God on earth, which will take place 1,000 years later.

and among them... This could be speaking of a war and bombs, possibly. Even though these are doing the fighting, the judgment is from God. God is just using them to bring the judgment. There will be no question that God is God.

God will also punish the homelands of the invaders: I will send fire on Magog and on those who live in safety in the coastlands. Sending fire implies destruction and military devastation (Eze. 30:8, 30:14,30:16; cf. Hos. 8:14; Amos 1:4, 1:7, 1:10, 1:14; 2:2, 2:5).

Romans Chapter 11 Vs. 6

The Remnant of Israel

And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. Rom 11:6

And if by... The Jews were saved by grace and not because of any connection with a covenant of works. If it were of works, then it would cease to be a free and unmerited gift. Grace is charis, meaning “favor” or “kindness”. A closely-related word, charisma, means “a free gift.” For a gift to truly be a gift, it must be unmerited and unearned.

it be of... Once you mix one particle of work into the transaction, it is no longer fully grace since merit becomes involved.

Israel does not deserve God’s continued favor. Like all who have been chosen by God, the nation Israel, as represented by the believing remnant among the Jews, does not deserve God’s continued election.

Paul emphasizes that it is by God’s undeserved, unmerited favor, which overcomes the rejection and crucifixion of Israel’s own Messiah. Israel neither earned nor deserves God’s favor. He stands by Israel because of His name’s sake (Eze. 36:20-24).

Concerning the gospel, unbelieving Jews are enemies, but concerning election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Rom. 11:28-32).

Eph. 2:8-9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:” “Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

We see from this that we cannot work our way to heaven, Salvation is a free gift. Truly even the Holy Spirit must woo you, or the desire to come to Jesus would never be there. Our part in all of this is to reach out and take what God has offered to us. Truly we have nothing to do with who we are as we read in this next Scripture.

1Cor. 15:10 “But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which [was bestowed] upon me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.”

Again Paul added that this choice is totally by God’s grace (cf. Eph. 2:8-9) and he emphasized the antithesis between grace and works (cf. Rom. 4:4-5; Rom. 9:30-32).

Ezekiel Chapter 39 Vs. 5

 Prophecy against Gog

Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken [it], saith the Lord GOD. Eze. 39:5

upon the open... The open field refers to all the land of Israel and surrounding countries where the hosts of the armies of all nations under Antichrist will be mobilized, but mainly to the mountains of Israel (Eze. 39:17).

This speaks of the Lord destroying them, before they get to the cities.

Romans Chapter 11 Vs. 5

The Remnant of Israel

Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. Rom 11:5

is a remnant... Doctrine of the Remnant:

The doctrine of the remnant always refers to Judah and the other tribes of Israel, never to Gentiles or the church. It teaches that God is obligated to save a remnant of all Israel, so as to preserve their line to eventually fulfill with them the covenants made with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David. God promised an eternal line to these men, and He promised their descendants an eternal land (Gen. 12:1-3, 12:7; 13:14-17; 15:18-21; 17:2-8, 17:19; 21:12; 22:17-18; 26:3-4; 28:3-4, 28:13-15; 2Sam. 7:1-29). God often predicted the deliverance and preservation of a remnant of the thirteen tribes and their final and eternal restoration under their Messiah (Isa. 1:9; 10:20-22; 11:10-12, 11:16; 38:1-22:31-32; 46:3; Jer. 23:3; 31:7; 39:9; 40:11; Eze. 6:8-10; Joel 2:32; Mic. 2:12; 5:3-8; Zeph. 2:7-9; 3:13; Zec. 8:6-12; Rom. 9:27; 11:5; Rev. 12:17). According to Isa. 1:9 Isaiah predicted that a very small remnant would be saved in the coming destruction of Judah and Jerusalem; otherwise Israel would have been totally destroyed like Sodom and Gomorrah.

election of grace... Grace elects to save all that will believe. Greek: eklektos, picked out, chosen.

Four Elect’s of God

1. Christ (Isa. 42:1; 1Pet. 2:6)

2. All Christians (Rom. 8:33; Col. 3:12; Tit. 1:1; John 15:16; Eph. 1:4; 2:10; 2Thes. 2:13; 2Jhn. 1:1, 1:13)

3. Israel (Isa. 45:4; 65:9, 65:22; Mat. 24:21-31; Mark 13:22, 13:27; 1Pet. 1:2)

4. Angels (1Tim. 5:21)

Anyone chosen of God at any time, Jew or Gentile, is the elect of God (Rom. 9:11; 11:5, 11:7, 11:28; 1Thes. 1:4; 1Pet. 5:13; 2Pet. 1:10). All men are called to become God’s elect or chosen ones and can be if they will choose God (Mat. 11:28-30; 20:16; John 1:12; 3:16-20; 6:37; Eph. 1:4; 2Thes. 2:13; Jas. 2:5; 1Tim. 2:4; 2Pet. 3:9; Rev. 17:14; 22:17).

Paul then writes: “So then also, at the present time, a remnant [of Israel] has come to be by [God’s] choosing and unmerited favor.” This “remnant” composed of Jews, by believing in Jesus Christ, became a part of that real “Israel” composed of “true Jews.”

Although the nation had rejected Jesus, thousands of individual Jews had come to faith in Him.

After the historical illustration Paul drew a conclusion for his day: So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace (lit., “a remnant according to the election of grace has come to be”). Paul was only one of many in his generation elected to faith from the people of Israel. In every generation of the church “a remnant chosen by grace” has been called from among the Jews.

Ezekiel Chapter 39 Vs. 4

Prophecy against Gog

Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that [is] with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and [to] the beasts of the field to be devoured. Eze. 39:4

fall upon the... Gog and his mighty armies will be destroyed at this time, a fact which proves that all of Ezekiel 38-39 refer to Armageddon and the second coming of Christ.

all thy bands... great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords. Sixteen statements—Gog’s army:

1. Rosh (Septuagint in Eze. 38:2; 39:1)

2. Meshech (Refers to the Sons of Japheth.)

3. Tubal (Refers to the Sons of Japheth.)

4. Persia (Eze. 38:5; 27:10; 2Ch. 36:20-23; Ezr. 1:1-8; Est. 1:3, 1:14, 1:18; 10:2; Dan. 11:43)

5. Ethiopia (Eze. 38:5; 29:10; 30:4-5)

6. Libya (Eze. 38:5; 30:5; Dan. 11:43)

7. Gomer (Refers to the Sons of Japheth.)

8. Togarmah (Refers to the Sons of Japheth.)

9. Many people (Eze. 38:6, 38:9)

10. Ten kingdoms of the Revised Roman Empire (Dan. 7:23-24; Rev. 17:12-17)

11. Many countries (Dan. 11:41)

12. Countries east and north of the 10 kingdoms (Dan. 11:44)

13. All the heathen ... Multitudes, multitudes (Joel 3:11-14)

14. All nations (Zec. 14:1-5)

15. The kings of the earth and their armies (Rev. 16:13-16; 19:19-21)

16. The whole world (Rev. 16:13-16)

the ravenous birds... The same prediction as in Eze. 39:17-20; Mat. 24:27-28; Luke 17:34-37; Rev. 19:17-21. The fowls and beasts of the earth will literally eat the flesh and drink the blood of the millions slain at Armageddon.

This speaks of them dying in such vast numbers, that there is no way, until this is over, to bury them. Their bodies will be eaten of the vultures of the air. Even the beasts passing by will eat their carcasses. There will be no one left to stop them.

Having brought them against the mountains of Israel (Eze. 39:2; cf. Eze. 38:8), God will weaken them (Eze. 39:3) and strike them down on the mountains of Israel. This once-mighty army will then be food for birds and… wild animals.

Gog and his mighty armies will be destroyed at this time, a fact which proves the whole two chapters (38-39) refers to the leading up to Armageddon and the 2nd advent of Christ.
