The Lord Accuses Israel
They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity. Hos. 4:8
They
eat up... They are the problem; that is, the priesthood. They have
not helped the people face their sin and deal with it. Rather, they
have gloried and taken pleasure in the sin of the people.
the
sin of... Sin
Hebrew: chatta’ah,
translated "sin offering" 116 times. The sin offering of My
people. Such was supposed to be a burnt offering, but the people ate
the sin offerings instead (Lev. 6:26, 6:30).
they
set their... There was an offering
for sin. Perhaps, this is speaking of the evil priest being pleased
with their sin.
He would receive more offerings to eat, instead of correcting their iniquity.
In their greed the priests fed on the sins of the people by encouraging them to multiply the hypocritical sacrifices which the Lord hated (cf. Hos. 6:6; 8:11-13). The priests’ underlying motive in doing this was greed, since they received portions of the offerings which were presented (cf. Lev. 7:7-10, 7:28-34; Num. 18:8-19; Deut. 18:1-5).
