 Warning Concerning Antichrists

1 John 2:24 "Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father."

Let that therefore... Let or permit that which you have heard from the beginning remain in you. This no doubt refers to Christ, as is clear from the same expression in 1Jhn. 1:1; 2:13, 2:14.

As for you (ὑμεῖς)

This is the rendering of the Rev. The force of the emphatic you at the beginning of the sentence is utterly lost in the A.V., which takes the pronoun simply as nominative to ye have heard. You is emphatic by way of contrast with the false teachers (1Jhn. 2:22).

John exhorts his readers to persevere in the face of false teaching and belief. The Greek text emphasizes the readers, in contrast to those who have gone out, verse 19: You, therefore, let what you have heard from the beginning abide in you.

If that which... People will continue in the Father and in the Son only as long as they permit such relationship. If they do not permit the Father and Son to abide in their lives, then what? Believers must remain in Him to bring forth fruit. If any man does not abide in Him, he is cast forth as a branch and is withered and burned. See John 15:6.

See on 1Jhn. 1:1. Notice the change in the order of the repeated sentence, that which ye heard from the beginning: ὃ ἠκούσατε ἀπ' ἀρχῆς, that which ye heard; the emphasis being on their reception of the message: ὃ ἀπ ἀρχῆς ἠκούσατε, that which ye heard from the beginning; emphasizing the time of the reception as coincident with the origin of their faith.

remain Greek: meno, to abide; stand one’s ground; continue. The same word is translated three ways in this same verse: abide, remain, and continue. If you allow or permit Christ to abide meno in you, He will remain meno in you, and if Christ remains in you, then you shall continue meno in the Son and in the Father.

The pure gospel message that had been brought to them was to be kept at all cost. Let this gospel message live continually abide in you. This is simply saying; reject the false message of the antichrist. To hang on to the teachings of Christ, brings the Father and the Son into your life.

in the Son and in the Father

Compare the reverse order in 1Jhn. 2:22. Here the thought is that of rising through the confession of the Son to the knowledge of the Father; there the thought is of the issue of denial culminating in the denial of the Father (Westcott).

In light of the readers’ responsibilities to abide

The readers must see that what they have heard from the beginning (cf. 1Jhn. 1:1; 2:7; 3:11) remains in them. If it does NIV paraphrases here, they will remain in the Son and in the Father. The term translated remain is again menō, which the NIV renders as live and lives in 1Jhn. 2:6, 2:10, 2:14, 2:17. John’s point was that if the readers would resist the lies of the antichrists and let the truth they had heard from the beginning abide or be at home in them, they would continue to abide in the fellowship of God the Father and God the Son.
