Love One Another
1 John 3:24 "And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us."Abideth in Him and He in Him
“Therefore let God be a home to thee and be thou the home of God: abide in God, and let God abide in thee” (Bede).
dwelleth in him... See Christ’s words about abiding in John 15:7 below. He in him refers to Christ in the believer. The Spirit gives internal assurance to corroborate the external testimony of true faith, active love, and consistent obedience.he in him... Twenty-one reasons "we do know that we know Him":
1. By personal fellowship (1Jhn. 1:3-7; 2:13)
2. Fullness of joy in the heart (1Jhn. 1:4)
3. Keeping His commandments (1Jhn. 2:3; 3:22)
4. Walking even as He walked (1Jhn. 2:6)
5. Love of the brethren (1Jhn. 2:9-11; 3:10-19, 3:23; 4:7-21; 5:1)
6. Overcoming the world and Satan (1Jhn. 2:13-14; 5:4, 5:18)
7. Hatred of the world (1Jhn. 2:15-17)
8. Being one with Christians (1Jhn. 2:19)
9. Holy Spirit anointing (1Jhn. 2:20-27)
10. Knowing the truth that sets free (1Jhn. 2:21; John 8:32-36)
11. Acknowledging God and Christ (1Jhn. 2:22-25)
12. Doing righteousness (1Jhn. 2:29; 3:7-10; 5:1-4, 5:18)
13. Purifying ourselves (1Jhn. 3:3)
14. Being born again (1Jhn. 2:29; 3:9; 5:1-18)
15. Cleansing from sin (1Jhn. 1:7-9; 3:5-10)
16. Freedom from condemnation (1Jhn. 3:20-24)
17. The indwelling Spirit (1Jhn. 3:24; 4:4, 4:13)
18. Faith (1Jhn. 2:23; 5:1, 5:10)
19. Confessing Christ (1Jhn. 4:14-15)
20. Receiving Christ (1Jhn. 5:10-13; John 1:12)
21. Answered prayer (1Jhn. 3:21-22; 5:14-15)
John 14:23 "Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him."
John 15:7 "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you."
John 14:16-17 "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;" "[Even] the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you."
by the Spirit... Plain evidence of sonship (1Jhn. 3:24; 4:13; Rom. 8:15; Gal. 4:6). Only sons are given the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:9). This does not refer to the fullness of the Spirit, which all sons have not received (John 7:37-39).
Spirit
The first mention of the Spirit in the Epistle. Never found with Holy in the Epistles or Revelation.
Another view, as into Judas. Satan, as an angel, could not possibly enter physically into Judas, for he has his own personal spirit body as big as a man. The so called doctrine of interpenetration, that is, persons entering physical into each other, is false. The Bible does speak of the Corinthians and Philippians being in Paul’s heart (2Cor. 7:3; Phlp. 1:7); God being in Christ (2Cor. 5:19); Christ being in God (John 14:20); God and Christ being in each other (John 14:10-11); men being in both the Father and the Son (1Jhn. 2:24); men being in Christ (2Cor. 5:17); men and the Spirit being in each other (Rom. 8:9); Christ being in men (Col. 1:27; Rom. 8:10); man and Christ being in each other (John 14:20); all creation being in God (Acts 17:28); and Satan entering into men (Luke 22:3; John 13:27). However, these passages refer to being in union with, being consecrated to the same end of one in mind, purpose, and life. They do not teach physical entrance of one being into another. It may be best understood by a man and woman becoming one in life together, being in each other’s plans, life, etc. Hence, Satan entering into Judas simply means Judas submitted to Satan’s temptation to betray Jesus. He became one with Satan, like men become one in spirit with God when joined to Him in consecration (1Cor. 6:17).
Discerning the indwelling God
Since the thematic statement of 1Jhn. 2:28, John’s argument has passed through two stages: (1) the one born of God is manifested only through righteousness (2:29-3:10a), and (2) this righteousness takes the form of a Christlike love for the brethren that leads to boldness in prayer (1Jhn. 3:10-23). Now John showed that this kind of life is the manifestation of the indwelling God.
Discerning The Spirit of Truth
Two new themes appear in this verse. The first theme is the epistle’s first reference to God, or Christ, abiding in each obedient believer. Those who obey His commands cf. 1Jhn. 2:3; 3:23; 5:2-3) live menei, abide in Him, and He in them. That the abiding life involves this mutuality is made plain in the Parable of the Vine and the Branches (John 15:4-5, 15:7).
The second new idea is the epistle’s first of six explicit references to the Holy Spirit (cf. 1Jhn. 4:2, 4:6, 4:13; 5:6, 5:8; cf. the Holy One in 1Jhn. 2:20). The way a believer can verify that God lives menei, abides in him is by the operation of God’s Spirit in his life. John then showed that God’s Spirit is the Spirit of both faith (1Jhn. 4:1-6) and love (1Jhn. 4:7-16) the two aspects of the two-part command given in 1Jhn. 3:23.
