 A Vision of Four Chariots

š^eliyšiy, שָׁלִשִׁי

šališiy: I. A masculine adjective meaning third in a series of three or more or a third part of something. It refers to any third in a series. Its feminine form is š ^eliyšîṯ and š ^elîšiyyah. It indicates the third in any series of things (Gen. 1:13; 2:14). Its plural form means third also (1Sam. 19:21), a third group of messengers (mal’āḵîm š^elišîm). The third day means the day after tomorrow (1Sam. 20:5). With the definite article, it can mean a fraction or one-third of the whole (2Sam. 18:2).

II. An adjective meaning third in a series or a third part of. With the definite article added, according to context, it refers to David's three greatest men, the three (2Sam. 23:8, 23:18; NASB, captains). Its use in Ezk. 42:3 indicates three stories or levels in the chambers of the Temple.

III. An adjective in the plural meaning thirty. The NASB reads thirty (men), a leading part of David's personal army. Not all ancient manuscripts read thirty here (2Sam. 23:18).

IV. An adjective meaning three years old. This is combined with the word preceding it to form a proper noun of a city, Eglath-shelishiyah (Isa. 15:5; Jer. 48:34, NASB). But it is rendered as an adjective defining a heifer in other translations, a heifer three years old (Isa. 15:5; Jer. 48:34).

מֶרְכָּבָה

merkāḇāh: A feminine noun meaning chariot. It refers to something ridden, for riding and is used of a two-wheeled vehicle, drawn by horses and normally used in war. Its uses include a war chariot (Exo. 14:25; 15:4); a chariot used by the state in its processions or for travel in general (Gen. 41:43; 46:29; Isa. 22:18). It was a symbol of military might and war (Isa. 2:7). It is used figuratively of the vehicles of war used by the Lord (Isa. 66:15; Hab. 3:8). Israel constructed some idolatrous "chariots of the sun" (2Kgs. 23:11).

lāḇān: An adjective meaning white. It is used of teeth (Gen. 49:12); sheep (Gen. 30:35); hair in the process of detecting a possible case of leprosy or a skin disease (Lev. 13:3-4); skin of reddish-white, again indicating possible leprosy (Lev. 13:42-43); or skin of a dull or faint white (Lev. 13:39); wood (Gen. 30:37); manna (Exo. 16:31); clothing (Ecc. 9:8); horses in a vision (Zec. 1:8; 6:3, 6:6).

sus: I. A masculine noun uniformly rendered as horse. It refers to any horse (Gen. 47:17; 49:17; Exo. 9:3). Horses were trained for special uses: chariotry and war (Exo. 14:9; 1Kgs. 20:1; Isa. 31:1; Ezk. 27:14). They were not to be multiplied by Israel's kings, but the kings were to trust the Lord for their might, not horses (Deu. 11:4; 17:16).

II. A masculine noun referring to a swallow, a crane, a swift. It is the name of a bird. It refers to a small, swift-flying type of bird, a swift or a swallow (Isa. 38:14; Jer. 8:7). Understanding the word to refer to a crane is difficult.

רְבִיעִי

r^eḇiy‛iy, רְבִעִי

r^eḇi‛iy: An adjective meaning fourth, a fourth part. It is an ordinal number indicating the fourth item in a series (Gen. 1:19; 2:14; 15:16). It indicates a fourth of something, a fraction, e.g., one-fourth of a hin (Exo. 29:40; Lev. 23:13; Num. 15:4). It can stand at the end of a construct chain to refer to the fourth in a series (2Kgs. 10:30). It means a square, foursquare in its feminine form (Ezk. 48:20).

בָּרֹד

bārōḏ: An adjective referring to something mottled, spotted, speckled, dappled. It refers to male goats and sheep (Gen. 31:10, 31:12) with this coloring and to horses drawing one of the chariots in Zechariah's vision (Zec. 6:3, 6:6). It features either different shades or different colors or both.

אָמֹץ

’āmōṣ: An adjective meaning powerful, strong. Some versions render this term as strong steeds (horses) (NKJV, Zec. 6:3), while others prefer powerful (NIV, Zec. 6:3, 6:7; cf. KJV, bay horses). The basic meaning is strength, power.
