Daniel's Vision of the Ram and the Goat
Daniel 8:7 "And I saw him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and smote the ram, and brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand."
moved with choler... Heb. Marar, to become bitter. This shows the hatred of Medo-Persia by the Greeks who had been invaded by Xerxes 144 years before and the growing enmity between the two powers.
and smote the... Medo-Persia decimating the kingdoms power, could not stand before Alexander's kingdom.
Alexander's kingdom cast down Medo-Persia to the ground, and stamped upon the kingdom of Medo-Persia and there was none that could deliver Medo-Persia out of his hand.
In this series of battles over the period of 334-330 B.C., Alexander the Great decisively destroyed Persian power and became the master of the ancient Near Eastern known World.
The ram was powerless to defend himself and the goat subjugated the ram. The greatness that had characterized the ram now belonged to the goat. Previously none could escape from the ram’s power (Dan. 8:4); now none could escape from the goat (Dan. 8:7).
