Daniel Interprets the Handwriting
And now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing: Dan. 5:15
they could not... "They could not" is a familiar phrase in connection with man apart from God.
Twenty-one Things that People Could Not Do:
1. Dwell together because of the abundance of their stock (Gen. 13:6).
2. Speak peaceably unto Joseph (Gen. 37:4).
3. Produce lice (magicians, Exo. 8:18).
4. Stand before Moses (magicians, Exo. 9:1-35).
5. Drink of waters of Marah (Exo. 15:23).
6. Stand before their enemies (Jos. 7:12; Jdg. 2:14).
7. Drive them out (Jos. 15:63; 17:12).
8. Follow David to battle (1Sa. 30:21).
9. Recover themselves in defeat before Israel (2Ch. 14:13).
10. Cause Israel to cease work on the temple (Ezr. 5:5).
11. Drink of the bloody waters (Psm. 78:44).
12. Spread the sail (Isa. 33:23).
13. Read the writing (Dan. 5:8).
14. Show the interpretation (Dan. 5:15).
15. Bring the boat to land (Jon. 1:13).
16. Cure someone (Mat. 17:16; Mar. 9:18; Luke 9:40).
17. Answer Him again (Luke 14:6).
18. Take hold of His words (Luke 20:26).
19. Believe, because they hardened their own hearts and refused to do so (John 12:39).
20. Enter into rest because of their unbelief (Heb. 3:19).
21. Endure the voice of God (Heb. 12:20).
