The Prosecution of Daniel
Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee. Dan. 6:16
Thy God whom... The 9th prophecy in Daniel (Dan. 6:16, fulfilled). Next, Dan. 7:2.
thou servest continually... Daniel had literally served God continually for 80 to 90 years and had experienced many demonstrations of his union with God. The king had absolute faith in the ability of God and in Daniel’s power with God to deliver him from the lions. Daniel now had the same opportunity of showing his faith in God as did the Jews of Dan. 3:1-30. The lions were no less terrible than the fiery furnace. God had power over both and His own chosen ones were delivered (Dan. 3:27; 6:22).
The king gave the order that Daniel be thrown into the lions’ den.
As he was thrown in — to what seemed to be certain death — the king said… May your God, whom you serve continually (cf. Dan. 6:20; 3:17), rescue you. Whether Darius knew about God’s deliverance of Daniel’s three friends from the fiery furnace in Nebuchadnezzar’s day is not known. Yet Darius’ statement expressed a desire that Daniel be spared. He certainly wanted him spared, for he obviously appreciated his administrative abilities (cf. Dan. 6:2-3). Perhaps he had been impressed with Daniel’s confidence in God.
