Romans Chapter 6 Vs. 20

Slaves to Righteousness

For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. Rom 6:20

For when ye... Again Paul emphasizes the fact that a man cannot be a saint and a sinner; holy and sinful; and cannot serve God and Satan, or be a servant of sin and righteousness at the same time (Mat. 6:24).

Paul is explaining here and he is making this just as clear as he can so that they will understand. He is not just speaking in parables or even spiritually, but literally so those in the flesh can understand. Sin occurs through lust of the flesh.

ye were free... Meaning spiritually dead in sins and trespasses.

Paul once again stated that slavery to sin and to righteousness are mutually exclusive (cf. Rom. 6:13, 6:16).
