Gabriel Brings an Answer
give thee skill... To give wisdom and understanding concerning the future of Israel and last day events. This time Gabriel did not interpret a vision that had been seen, but gave a simple direct prophecy of events concerning Israel and Jerusalem from Daniel’s day to the end of all Gentile oppression of Jews. No interpretation is needed. All that is required is to read and believe what is written for our learning. If Daniel was commanded to understand the vision and consider it, then we are to do likewise.
This will be a gift of understanding. His understanding will be far above the natural man’s. God will equip Daniel to do the job He has sent him to do.
The answer of God to Daniel’s prayer came immediately through the angel Gabriel. Although Daniels’s prayer was primarily for God’s forgiveness and the restoration of the Jews to their land, his initial concern for God’s program for Israel (verse 2) caused the Lord to reveal to him an outline of Israel’s future from that point on.
Though
Daniel
did not refer to it in his prayer, he was evidently concerned about
God’s program for Israel from that point on (cf. Dan.
9:2). Jeremiah’s prophecy
(Jer.
25:11-12) had revealed God’s
plan for the nation only up to the end of the 70-year Babylonian
Captivity. Daniel wanted to know what would transpire after that.
Daniel’s previous two visions (Dan. 7-8) of forthcoming events
dealt primarily with Gentile nations that would rise beginning with
Babylon. So Gabriel was dispatched by God to satisfy Daniel’s
desire and to reveal God’s program for His people until its
consummation in the covenanted kingdom under Israel’s Messiah.
Gabriel would give
Daniel insight
into God’s purposes for His people. Because the prophet was highly
esteemed (cf. Dan.
10:11, Dan.
10:19) by God, Gabriel had
received an
answer for Daniel as
soon as Daniel
began
to pray.
