Chambers for the Priests
And the chamber whose prospect is toward the north is for the priests, the keepers of the charge of the altar: these are the sons of Zadok among the sons of Levi, which come near to the LORD to minister unto him. Eze 40:46
chamber whose prospect... This chamber for the altar priests was on the opposite side of the great altar and at the south gate, facing the altar and the north.
sons of Zadok... Proper names tie the vision to historical reality, calling for literal interpretation. This Levitical family descended from Levi, Aaron, Eleazar and Phinehas. In accord with God’s covenant with Phinehas, and because of Eli’s unfaithfulness and Zadok faithfulness to David and Solomon, Zadok sons serve as priests in the millennial temple.
This room was for the priests in charge of the temple, and the room on the south side was for the priests in charge of the altar. These rooms probably will serve as utility rooms and rest areas for the priests on duty. These priests will be descended from Zadok (cf. Eze. 43:19; 44:15; 48:11), the high priest in Solomon’s day (1Ki. 1:26-27).
