Fulfilling the Law Through Love
The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Rom 13:12
let us therefore... Eight commands for Christians:
1. Cast off the works of darkness (Rom. 13:12).
2. Put on the armor of light (Rom. 13:12).
3. Walk decently and well behaved (Rom. 13:13).
4. Stop reveling and drinking (Rom. 13:13).
5. Quit all immoral living (Rom. 13:13).
6. Refrain from quarreling, contention, and jealousies (Rom. 13:13).
7. Clothe selves with the character of Jesus Christ (Rom. 13:14).
8. Make no provision for lust (Rom. 13:14).
put on the... To put on the armor of light means the protection that practical righteousness provides. Paul exhorts believers to repent of and forsake their sins.
In this Scripture and the one above in Thessalonians, we see that Christians are not in darkness, we are children of the Light.
1Thes. 5:4-5 “But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.” “Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.”
Jesus is the Light and if we are full of Him, then we are full of light, as well.
Paul considered the time of Christ’s return and the consummation of salvation for believers (Rom. 13:11) as the start of a new day. The present time, while Christ is absent (John 14:2-3; Acts 1:11) and Satan is at work (2Cor. 4:4; Eph. 2:2), is described as the night (cf. 2Pet. 1:19). Since “the day” is almost here, Paul urged his readers to put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Christians are soldiers in a conflict who need to be alert and equipped for battle (Eph. 6:10-17; 1Thes. 5:8). Upright, Christ-honoring living is often referred to as being in the light (John 12:36; Eph. 5:8, 5:14; Col. 1:12; 1Thes. 5:5; 1Jhn. 1:7; 2:10).
