Romans Chapter 13 Vs. 2

Submission to the Authorities

Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. Rom 13:2

Whosoever therefore resisteth... Whoever sets himself against the plan of God in human government, resists God. They who resist will be punished.

resisteth the ordinance... Since all government is God ordained, disobedience is rebellion against God.

The apostle’s basic exhortation is, Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities (lit., “higher authorities”). The basic reason for such submission is that those authorities are established by God (cf. Dan. 4:17, 4:25, 4:34-35). An individual who rebels against the authority, therefore, is rebelling against (lit., “has taken a stand against”) what God has instituted (lit., “the ordinance of God”). Such persons are thus actually rebelling against God, and bring civil and/or divine judgment on themselves.
