Daniel Chapter 1 Vs. 17

God Gave Them

As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. Dan. 1:17

God gave them... This confirms the supernatural element in the training of these four youths. God blessed them physically when they took a stand for a proper diet (Dan. 1:8-16). He also blessed them mentally and spiritually for their stand regarding His law.

and Daniel had... Daniel had a special gift of God in understanding all visions and dreams—the gift of interpretation (similar in operation to the gift of interpretation of tongues of 1Co. 12:10, 12:30; 14:26-28). It was simply divine skill and understanding imparted by the Holy Spirit. Any gift of the Spirit is divine ability imparted by the Spirit of God dwelling in the one so blessed (1Co. 12:4-11). Daniel was to use his gift many times for God’s glory, as seen in Dan. 2:1-49; 4:1-37; 5:1-31; 7:1-28; 8:1-27; 9:1-27; and Daniel 10-12.

in all visions... Four Hebrew words translated "vision" in Daniel:
1. Hebrew: chazown, mental sight; dream; revelation; oracle (Dan. 1:17; 8:1, 8:2, 8:13, 8:15, 8:17, 8:26; 9:21, 9:24; 10:14; 11:14). This could come in the form of divine utterance of words (Dan. 9:24; 1Sa. 3:1; Jer. 14:14; 23:16), a dream (Isa. 29:7), a writing (Isa. 1:1; Nah. 1:1; Hab. 2:2-3), or a mental picture while one is awake (Dan. 8:1, 8:2, 8:13-17, 8:26; 9:21-24; cp. Num. 24:4, 24:16).
2. Aramaic: chezev, sight; vision (Dan. 2:19, 2:28; 4:5, 4:9, 4:10, 4:13; 7:1, 7:2, 7:7, 7:13, 7:15). This word is used of visions while asleep, known as dreams, as seen in these passages.
3. Hebrew: mar’ah, a vision as seeing something in a mirror; appearance (Dan. 10:7, 10:8, 10:16; Gen. 46:2; Num. 12:6; 1Sa. 3:15; Eze. 1:1; 8:3; 40:2; 43:3).
4. Hebrew: mar’eh, sight; appearance (Dan. 8:16, 8:26, 8:27; 9:23; 10:1; Eze. 8:4; 11:24; 43:3).
and dreams... The 3 words translated "dream" in Daniel—chalowm, (Dan. 2:1-3), chelem, (Dan. 2:4-9, 2:26-28, 2:36, 2:45; 4:5-9, 4:18-19; 5:12; 7:1), and chalam, (Dan. 2:1, 2:3)—all have the meaning of something seen while asleep.
