The
Fiery Furnace
Then
was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was
changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego: therefore
he spake, and commanded that they should heat the furnace one seven
times more than it was wont to be heated. Dan. 3:19
full
of fury...
When the king, full of rage, commanded the furnace to be heated seven
times hotter than usual, he only magnified God all the more (Dan.
3:19, 3:25-28). In "The Song of the Three Holy Children" of
the Apocrypha it is stated that the servants of Nebuchadnezzar kept
throwing "rosin, pitch, tow, and small wood; so that the flame
streamed forth above the furnace forty-nine cubits." This was 73
feet 6 inches. The fire was so hot that it killed those putting the
men in the furnace (Dan. 3:22).
